Controlling the electrostatic Faraday instability using superposed electric fields

نویسندگان

چکیده

We present an experimental study of the electrostatic Faraday instability at interface between a dielectric and conducting liquid. response to ac electric field, which is superposed by either second field different frequency, or dc field. An important control parameter mixing ratio, denotes relative amplitudes components driving signal. For ac/ac driving, gradual variations ratio can induce jump pattern wavelength, for ac/dc wavelength be tuned continuously adjusting ratio.

Suppression of Rayleigh-Taylor instability using electric fields

This study considers the stability of two stratified immiscible incompressible fluids in a horizontal channel of infinite extent. Of particular interest is the case with the heavier fluid initially lying above the lighter fluid, so that the system is susceptible to the classical Rayleigh-Taylor instability. An electric field acting in the horizontal direction is imposed on the system and it is ...

Observations of the Faraday Instability

First observed by Michael Faraday in 1831 [1], Faraday waves are surface instabilities that arise in a fluid undergoing vertical oscillations above a critical amplitude and/or frequency. Faraday himself measured that the resulting surface wave frequency was equal to half the driving frequency. Above this critical amplitude/frequency the fluid surface can exhibit an incredible variety of pattern...

Magnetic Faraday – Instability

– In a magnetic fluid parametrically driven surface waves can be excited by an external oscillating magnetic field. A static magnetic field changes the restoring forces and damping coefficients of the various surface waves. This property enables the excitation of both subharmonic and harmonic responses of the standing waves. Introduction. – " Most fluids, if not all, may be used to produce thes...

Electrostatic charges in v x B 1 fields : the Faraday disk and the I rotating sphere

When a conductor moves in a magnetic field, v x B acts like a distributed source. If the divergence of this vector is not zero, then the divergence of E is not zero either and the conductor carries electrostatic charges whose fields are as important as v x B. The Faraday disk and a conducting sphere rotating in a uniform magnetic field serve as examples. This little known effect plays a fundame...

The Faraday instability in wormlike micelle solutions

The behaviour of semi-dilute wormlike micelle solutions under vertical vibrations is investigated using classical measurements of the Faraday instability threshold along with two new experiments based on particle imaging velocimetry and birefringence. We provide evidence for the presence of oscillations of the critical acceleration and wave number with the vibration frequency, which are linked ...
